Google introduces generative AI search performance tracking in Search Console

03/06/2026

Google has announced a positive update today (Wednesday 3 June 2026) that we think everyone will be pleased to hear about: they are finally launching dedicated performance reports in Search Console for generative AI.

This means you will soon be able to track the AI search performance of your site to see how often it is surfacing in:

  • AI Overviews

  • AI Mode

  • AI features in Discover

Google's AI search performance tracking announcement summed up

  • As of 3 June 2026, Google will be introducing Search generative AI performance reports in Search Console

  • This means GSC will have the data available for you to track how often your site is surfacing in AI overviews, AI mode and AI features in Discover

  • Google is currently rolling this out to a very small number of sites

  • Once this officially lands, you’ll be able to track impressions, pages and performance data

  • There is no mention of clicks, CTR or position tracking as yet

  • The reports will show performance by page, but there is no mention of query-level insights at this stage

  • Tracking visibility around these elements has been a blind spot until now, but this update means we will be able to provide cleaner and more accurate data

What will be included with Google’s AI SEO performance tracking?

Google is currently rolling out this Search Console update to a select number of sites to test it efficiently and gather feedback before making it available to everyone. However, once this does land for everyone, the new AI reporting will show:

  • Impressions: How often your links appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

  • Pages: The exact URLs Google is choosing to display.

  • Performance data breakdowns: Split by country, device, and dates over time with hourly, daily, weekly and monthly views.

Things to consider

Although this is an exciting update, there are still a few things missing that are worth noting:

  • The main addition at present is the ability to track impression data, but there is no mention of clicks, CTR or position tracking.

  • It looks like Google is only including the ability to view performance by page at the moment, so there won’t currently be any query-level insights.

What this means for our clients and us

Up until today, tracking visibility around these AI elements has been somewhat of a blind spot for everyone, so this is a really positive step forward that will give us:

  • Much cleaner and more accurate data

  • The ability to see exactly what’s working and what isn’t

  • The means to make more accurate decisions when it comes to strategy and performance
