How AI is creating a new route to your dealership

30/09/2026

Automotive dealerships have traditionally relied on Google and automotive marketplaces to reach prospective customers. Now, tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini allow people to research vehicles, compare prices and reviews, and find nearby stock using detailed, personalised questions.

Instead of searching “used family cars Leeds,” a customer might ask, “What is the best family car under £20,000 near me?” This creates another entry point into the buying journey, but appearing in the response does not mean the dealership receives the customer directly.

AI may surface your brand or stock before sending the customer to a marketplace or another third party. Dealers therefore need to understand who controls that hand-off, where customers are being sent and how much of the subsequent journey they own.

This article explores the two main routes from AI discovery to dealership, how they are emerging across the automotive market and how dealers can identify where their visibility needs to be stronger.

AI is changing how customers discover their next car

AI can influence several stages of the customer buying journey, particularly discovery, research and stock comparison. Dealers therefore need to include useful and trustworthy information on their websites that AI platforms can understand and surface. This is a really strong opportunity for dealerships to build awareness and trust of their brand before the customer has even decided where to shop.

Some ways to do this include keeping your stock up to date online and adding online trust signals that demonstrate your authority and expertise, such as reviews and detailed car descriptions.

However, visibility in AI results is only the beginning of the journey - while being mentioned or recommended by an AI platform is a positive first step, the customer’s next destination won’t necessarily be your site. The customer could be handed directly to your dealership or to an intermediary such as a marketplace or reviews platform. So, who controls the next stage of the journey?

Where does AI send the customer next?

Once customers have narrowed down their options, they may compare available stock, prices and reviews or look for nearby dealerships. AI itself doesn't complete the purchase: at some point, the customer needs to click through, view the vehicle, contact someone, or make an enquiry. That transition is the “hand-off,” and that is where different routes begin to emerge.

Route one - AI to dealership

The AI experience shows a vehicle and links the customer directly to the dealer’s own website. Click Dealer’s ChatGPT integration is a current example. It searches stock from participating independent retailers, but customers selecting a vehicle are directed to the supplying dealer’s website.

Route two - AI to marketplace to dealership

The AI experience uses stock held within a marketplace. The customer continues into that marketplace to view the listing, compare options or make contact, with the dealership appearing later in the journey. The key difference isn't whether your vehicle appears. It is who receives the customer immediately after the AI interaction.

Why route ownership matters to dealerships

When AI sends the customer to a marketplace or third-party platform, that platform controls the customer experience and the hand-off. They can influence the stock and dealerships the customer can see, and first-party data capture also becomes more complicated. This route can still provide valuable visibility and leads, but the dealership has less control over the customer experience, how its stock is presented and how enquiries are made.

The goal is not to eliminate marketplaces and third-party sites. It is to understand where they are involved and where a more direct route to your dealership could be strengthened.

Do you know who owns the route to your dealership?

To start, create a visibility benchmark. You can gauge your position using customer and stock prompts in both dedicated automotive AI apps and general ChatGPT, Gemini, or other AI searches. Your tests should cover makes, models, and locations relevant to your dealership, and record where, what, when, and how you appear. This can reveal the routes currently available to customers, although it will not provide a complete view of their real buying journey.

How Fusion can strengthen the route from AI to your dealership

Appearing in AI search is valuable, but dealers also need to understand what happens next. Fusion’s AI Stock Visibility Audit can test how your dealership and vehicles appear, where the information comes from and whether customers are sent directly to you or through a third party.

The findings provide a benchmark for your visibility and highlight where competitors, inaccurate information, weak destination pages or tracking gaps may be affecting the journey. We can then help strengthen the route through technical SEO, stock-feed improvements, dealership and vehicle content, and better attribution.

Our experience with automotive brands including Vertu Motors, Halfords, Motia and Car Benefit Solutions means we understand how search, content, media and measurement work together across the buying journey.
